CIHANGIR LOFT

Residential Transformation | Istanbul, Türkiye

Located in a 1970s residential building in Cihangir, Istanbul, this 200 m² apartment underwent a comprehensive spatial transformation. Originally configured as a three-bedroom residence, the apartment presented an unconventional relationship with natural light: its living spaces faced a poorly illuminated interior lightwell, while the corridor occupied the only facade with direct access to daylight.

The redesign fundamentally reconsidered this spatial hierarchy, guided by the resident’s lifestyle and the potential of the existing architecture. By transforming the compartmentalized apartment into a one-bedroom loft, the project liberated the primary living spaces and re-established their connection with natural light.

Living, dining, kitchen, fireplace lounge and workspace functions were brought together within a continuous open-plan composition. The removal of conventional spatial boundaries allowed daylight to penetrate deeper into the interior, creating a generous and fluid living environment.

The private suite follows the same architectural approach, integrating the bedroom, open bathroom and dressing area into a cohesive spatial sequence.

Rather than simply reorganizing the existing rooms, the project redefines the apartment through light, openness and spatial continuity, transforming the limitations of its original plan into the defining qualities of a contemporary urban residence.
